Republican Party


The Republican Party (also known as the Grand Old Party or GOP) is one of the two major political parties in the United States. Anti-slavery activists founded it in 1857. 18 United States presidents have been Republican. The most recent Republican president was George W. Bush. The current ideals of the Republican Party are conservative. A majority of the governorships and state legislatures are currently held by the party. Mitt Romney is currently running as the Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential election against Barack Obama. The Republican Party holds a majority in the House of Representatives.
